What is MechanoWell?

MechanoWell® is a smart well system that can measure the overall macroscopic stiffness and local stiffness of soft biological tissues, such as lung tissue.

By measuring stiffness of lung tissues, which is a therapeutic endpoint, it can deliver a lung tissue screening platform for pulmonary drug discovery. Other than lung tissues, it can potentially measure other biological tissues, including kidney, bladder, heart and liver. generate in vivo-like data at an in vitro scale, while simultaneously reducing cost, time, and animal testing.

How does MechanoWell work?


By pressing with an indenter, it can apply equibiaxial stretch to a membrane and an attached sheet-like biological sample (image on left). Simultaneously, it allows for imaging of the fiducial markers embedded on the membrane during the stretching process (image on right). By computing the deformation of the membrane, the user can robustly estimate stiffness of a sample without need for a force or displacement sensor.
